I'm putting together a list of free websites that allow you to search without having to pay.
http://www.familysearch.org/Excellent free search tools from the Church of Latter Day Saints. It's not a religious site at all they just provide the service and a very good one at that.
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ Another great source of information. FreeBMD is an ongoing project, the aim of which is to transcribe the Civil Registration index of births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales, and to provide free Internet access to the transcribed records. It's easy to use and makes an excellent tool for research.
http://www.freecen.org.uk/UK census online, another extremely good site and unlike the vast majority of census websites it's free
http://www.freereg.org.uk/UK Parish register online, free Parish register searches, part of the same family of search tools as freecen and freebmd.
http://ahds.ac.uk/history/genealogy/index.htmLink to the AHDS website where you will find a list of pretty good sources, some aren't free. AHDS History is funded by the JISC and AHRC to preserve and disseminate electronic data created by or for historians. Family historians may find the following links useful (Note: some of these links are pay per view).
